Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter, based in Saginaw, Mich., serves Saginaw, Midland and Bay counties. The city of Saginaw is a vibrant and exciting place to live, work, play and learn, where you will find everything you need to live life. It provides culture, diversity, recreation, community events, organizations and educational opportunities. But most importantly, it offers the service of the wonderful women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter.
Out of the love of Flint, Mich.’s Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter, our chapter was envisioned, created and nurtured. The year was 1967, in Saginaw, when 14 members who resided in the area received congratulations and best wishes from their sister chapter and then Regional Director Ione Gipson to pursue their dream and realize their goal of starting a new chapter.
Zeta Omega Zeta Chapter was established amidst much love, fanfare and prayers as the 14 members willingly accepted the task of being chartered members. The women believed it was necessary to establish themselves and provide a support organization for those in need in Saginaw.
Zeta Doves
Our chapter has the honor of having four Zeta Doves. These Sorors have remained faithful, active and financial and hold steadfast to their Zeta light. Our Doves are Sorors Annye P. Roberts, Mary Jackson, Shirley Nuckolls and Audrey McKandes.
Sisterhood
Our chapter is a diverse group of sorors, including Doves, new members, life members and legacies. The one true principle that binds us together is the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. In ZOZ, we spend time on the phone discussing personal issues and achievements; visit with each other; share meals at a favorite restaurant; connect at a conference; schedule monthly calls; send cards and letters for special occasions, and be the shoulder that is needed in life's most treacherous times.
One thing that we know, and we never lose sight of, is that we are our sisters’ keeper, and nothing can come in the way of that. Zeta Omega Zeta and Saginaw believe in “STRONG ROOTS...STRONG FUTURE!”
Community Involvement
Zeta Omega Zeta actively supports and sponsors the Freddye Curl Murphy Memorial Scholarship for graduating high school seniors, co-hosts the NAACP/Zeta Meet the Candidate Political Forum, participates with the national Adopt-a-School, and provides tutoring and mentoring programs to our youth auxiliaries. We also partner with other chapters in this Great Sisterhood to present outstanding community service projects and activities.
Finer Womanhood
Annually, the chapter sponsors a Finer Womanhood Program to honor individuals who have contributed exemplary service to the community. We name an Outstanding Organization of the Year as well as a Zeta of the Year.
Note: This is part of the Michigan State Organization’s online series "The MSO Great History Countdown! Our Centennial Journey to State Meeting" to leave a lasting gift to the state in honor of Zeta’s 100th anniversary. Histories from every graduate and undergraduate chapter in Michigan is being published in the month of September 2020 in the days leading up to the centennial state meeting. The project was approved under State Director Lynese Thomas’ administration, and overseen by MSO Epistoleus Earlene McMichael in partnership with MSO Historian Trudy Hale and Great Lakes Region Historian Norma Dartis.
